HARVESTING SHEEP SORREL ROOTS

Growing, harvesting and processing Sheep Sorrel Roots correctly is very labor-intensive which makes our Essiac products more expensive than others. There is no herbal company or farm that sells Sheep Sorrel Roots on the internet because it cannot be correctly harvested just with farm equipment. Therefore, we separate the roots from the tops using hand tools in order to establish an exact percentage of roots.

Rene Caisse stated in writing that Sheep Sorrel Roots are “very essential” to the Essic formula. All the major herb companies falsely label their “Essiac tea” because they do not include sheep sorrel roots! So their falsely labeled products are much cheaper.  Click Here to learn why Sheep Sorrel Roots are “very essential” to the Essiac Tea formula.

To make matters worse certified organic sheep sorrel leaf is no longer grown in the US so the major herb companies get cheap, low-quality sheep sorrel leaf from places like Croatia and Bulgaria where there are no quality controls nor is there any way to confirm if they are organically grown or not.

These companies often label their sheep sorrel from other countries as being “certified organic” but in reality there is no way to confirm that.  Herb companies do not travel around the world to visit each farm to see if the herbs are properly grown, weeded, harvested, dried and stored.

Sheep Sorrel can be weeded with cancer-causing herbicides so it is vital to know how Essiac herbs are grown.  People should not collect Sheep Sorrel along roadsides because Sheep Sorrel actually survives being poisoned with herbicides while other weeds are killed.  We grow our Essiac herbs safely without any toxic chemicals on Ronniger’s certified organic farm in North Idaho.

Harvesting the Roots of Sheep Sorrel

Sheep Sorrel tops are severed from the roots, the soil is loosened and the roots are dug up.  We then collect the roots and transport them to the area where we rinse off the dirt and separate extraneous material from the roots.

Sheep Sorrel roots are rinsed with deep well water (unchlorinated) to remove the soil.  After cleaning the roots they are loaded onto drying screens in our drying room.

At every step of our harvesting and processing we remove any weeds or other extraneous material.  The leaves and roots are dried with electric heaters with fans until thoroughly dried.  They are then cut into smaller pieces in our garden mulcher.

After cutting the leaves and roots are placed in large 6 mil Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, heat-sealed and then transported to our processing center.  Oxygen absorbers insure the quality of Sheep Sorrel by eliminating both oxygen and any remaining moisture.  The Sheep Sorrel is then powdered with our hammermill.  New oxygen absorbers are then added in new Mylar bags for storage.

HARVESTING SHEEP SORREL LEAF

From a medicinal standpoint Sheep Sorrel leaf is the most important part of the plant in the treatment of cancer.  The leaf contains the most oxalic acid which is the component that is most responsible for causing a metastasized cancer to retreat to the tumor site.  The flowers also contain oxalic acid when they first begin to grow.

According to Rene Caisse the best time to cut Sheep Sorrel leaf is in the spring before the flower stalks grow.   We carefully hand cut the leaf in the field with Makita cordless grass shears as close to the ground as possible without picking up dirt.  We must also work slowly and carefully so as not to cut ourselves with the sharp, moving sickle blades [See photo above].  It cannot be harvested with the usual farm machinery because Sheep Sorrel grows too close to the ground and the large sickle mowers pick up too much dirt.  Before harvesting the Sheep Sorrel must be thoroughly weeded.

Rene Caisse stated that the whole Sheep Sorrel plant is used.  Each part has its own function in the body.  Therefore, the aerial (above ground) portions of the plant are harvested at different stages of growth.

Sheep Sorrel leaves are never washed as this would degrade the quality and make them more difficult to dry.  After drying, all the parts of the plant are blended together to make our  SPECIAL BLEND ESSIAC TEA HERBS

* BUYER BEWARE!  Most Essiac companies and herb suppliers are now obtaining Sheep Sorrel leaf from Bulgaria and Croatia and it is dead plant material and not even green!  Therefore, most of the Essiac sold in the US now has little medicinal value for cancer patients.  We are concerned that this may eventually give quality Essiac Tea an undeserved reputation for being ineffective against cancer.  This may also give false hope for cancer patients.

This is why we place so much attention on how we grow our certified organic herbs and the extra effort and care we place on quality, even though our Essiac Tea Herbs cost significantly more than other Essiac tea providers.  As the old adage goes:  “You get what you pay for.”  *

We do not sell nor are we associated with the trademarked (TM) or registered (R) “ESSIAC” products that are sold by other companies in Canada and the US. We only sell the herbs so that people can make Rene Caisse’s tea in their own homes. Rene Caisse never registered, patented or trademarked “Essiac” which was simply her last name spelled backwards and was originally derived from a traditional native American herbal remedy for cancer. The word “Essiac” was in common usage in the 1930s, decades before anyone tried to corner the market by “registering” or “trademarking” the word “Essiac”. Furthermore, we only use the “Essiac” formula which Rene Caisse’s best friend, Mary McPherson, officially entered into the public domain in a sworn affidavit in 1994 in Bracebridge, Ontario. This formula uses Turkey rhubarb root which is much more pleasant tasting than the Indian rhubarb products on the market (which is why Rene Caisse switched to Turkey rhubarb in her final Essiac tea formula). The HealthFreedom.info website has posted Mary McPherson’s “Essiac” formula affidavit here. This is the formula we use.

Twenty years ago HealthFreedom.info was the first website to obtain and publish on the internet a certified copy of Mary McPherson’s Essiac formula affidavit from the Town of Bracebridge, Ontario, thus settling the controversy over what Rene Caisse’s true Essiac Tea formula was.

We include sheep sorrel roots in all our Essiac Tea products at precise percentages.  The percentages refer to the ratio of sheep sorrel root to the total sheep sorrel content in the formula.
