Essiac Tea — What Is the Secret Ingredient?

Rene Caisse was very secretive about the Essiac tea recipe. The secret ingredient of Essiac tea was discovered by Sheila Snow who obtained letters from Dr. Chester Stock of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1979.

Here is what Rene Caisse stated regarding the importance of using the whole sheep sorrel plant, including sheep sorrel roots:

“The herb that will destroy a cancer is the dog-eared sheep sorrel, sometimes called sourgrass. The entire plant must be used.” [1]

“The reason I offered to send you more material was because I know you cannot get the entire plant. You can buy the crushed leaves but they are no good alone. I found this out when I needed so much, when treating three to six hundred people afflicted with cancer every week for eight and a half years. I do know that the whole plant is needed.” [2]

“I am very shocked at the way your people are using the materials I sent you….They are just using leaves and stems, leaving out the roots. They are a part of Essiac.” [3]

“Dear Dr. Stock; I am worried about not receiving any reports on the tests. I thought about the way the lab had been preparing the material for the tests, and why they were not getting better results, so I read over their preparation and found that they were only using the leaves and stems, leaving out the roots, which are very essential in the ‘Essiac’ for treatments.” [4]

Sheep sorrel roots are much different than the leaves and the roots contain nutrients which are not present in the leaves. In fact, the sheep sorrel roots don’t even taste like the leaves–as if they are an entirely different herb!  The powdered roots taste bitter while the leaves have a sour, lemony taste.

It takes three years to grow a crop of sheep sorrel roots. Young roots initially have little or no potency or flavor. They are fragile and they are a golden yellow color.

We owe a lot of our knowledge of the herbs in Essiac tea to herbalist and Essiac historian Sheila Snow who worked with Rene Caisse from 1974 to 1977 with the intention to write Rene Caisse’s biography.  During this time Rene Caisse gave Sheila unique access to her papers and records.  Sheila Snow spent 27 years of her life assembling an impressive Essiac archive collection.

Regarding Sheep Sorrel Roots, Sheila stated that “A decoction of the root alone helps check stomach hemorrhage and blood coughed up from the lungs, clear up a jaundice condition as the liver is cleansed, and assist the expulsion of gravel from the bladder or kidneys.  Externally, decoction of the root has also healed acne, boils and eczema, when taken internally at the same time.”  [THE ESSENCE OF ESSIAC; 1993; Sheila Snow; p. 61 & 62]

This is good news for those who are concerned about bladder or kidney stones since the roots balance out the oxalic acid in the leaves.  Citric acid is also contained in the leaves and that also balances out the oxalic acid.

It is the oxalic acid which is contained in both the Sheep Sorrel leaves and flowers that causes a metastasized cancer to retreat to the tumor where it can then be expelled from the body with the help of the Sheep Sorrel Roots, Burdock Root, Slippery Elm and Turkey Rhubarb.

Therefore, it is the synergistic combination of all parts of the Sheep Sorrel plant plus the assistance of the three other herbs that helps prevent and heal cancer.  This is why this formula must be followed exactly to achieve the results that Rene Caisse achieved after more than fifty years of research and experience with real cancer patients.

It is also important to add the proper amount of Sheep Sorrel Roots to the Essiac formula–not too little and not too much.  Adding only a tiny amount of roots will not create the needed effect.  Adding too much will reduce the amount of Sheep Sorrel Leaf in the formula thus reducing the amount of oxalic acid which is necessary to detox metastasized cancer cells.

We recommend a Sheep Sorrel Root range from 10% to 25%.  Over 25% is too much.  We know of one Essiac supplier who sells 100% Sheep Sorrel Roots without any Leaf, which is incorrect and shows a lack of understanding of the role that Sheep Sorrel Leaf plays in the formula.  Both Sheep Sorrel Leaf and Sheep Sorrel Roots are “very essential” to the correct Essiac Tea formula.  Balance is the key.

* BUYER BEWARE!  Most Essiac companies and herb suppliers are now obtaining Sheep Sorrel leaf from Bulgaria and Croatia and it is dead plant material and not even green!  Therefore, most of the Essiac sold in the US now has little medicinal value for cancer patients.  We are concerned that this may eventually give quality Essiac Tea an undeserved reputation for being ineffective against cancer.  This may also give false hope for cancer patients.

This is why we place so much attention on how we grow our certified organic herbs and the extra effort and care we place on quality, even though our Essiac Tea Herbs cost significantly more than other Essiac tea providers.  As the old adage goes:  “You get what you pay for.”  *

We do not sell nor are we associated with the trademarked (TM) or registered (R) “ESSIAC” products that are sold by other companies in Canada and the US. We only sell the herbs so that people can make Rene Caisse’s tea in their own homes. Rene Caisse never registered, patented or trademarked “Essiac” which was simply her last name spelled backwards and was originally derived from a traditional native American herbal remedy for cancer. The word “Essiac” was in common usage in the 1930s, decades before anyone tried to corner the market by “registering” or “trademarking” the word “Essiac”. Furthermore, we only use the “Essiac” formula which Rene Caisse’s best friend, Mary McPherson, officially entered into the public domain in a sworn affidavit in 1994 in Bracebridge, Ontario. This formula uses Turkey rhubarb root which is much more pleasant tasting than the Indian rhubarb products on the market (which is why Rene Caisse switched to Turkey rhubarb in her final Essiac tea formula). The HealthFreedom.info website has posted Mary McPherson’s “Essiac” formula affidavit here. This is the formula we use.

Twenty years ago HealthFreedom.info was the first website to obtain and publish on the internet a certified copy of Mary McPherson’s Essiac formula affidavit from the Town of Bracebridge, Ontario, thus settling the controversy over what Rene Caisse’s true Essiac Tea formula was.

We include sheep sorrel roots in all our Essiac Tea products at precise percentages.  The percentages refer to the ratio of sheep sorrel root to the total sheep sorrel content in the formula.
